National Wushu: Originating from the Nation Going to the World
Xinhua News Agency, Sanya, November 25th (Reporter Geng Huihuang, Zhou Xin) On the 25th, the national Wushu event of the 12th National Traditional Minority Sports Meeting (hereinafter referred to as the "Games") will end in the gymnasium of Sanya University. Bagua Palm, Tongbi Boxing, Elephant Boxing, Taiji Sword, Shuangjian, Shuang Bian, the boxing equipment has its own characteristics, and the national culture has its own style.
Wushu originated in China, and after a long historical evolution, it has developed into many different styles of boxing, each of which includes the techniques, theories and methods of attack and defense fighting with bare hands and equipment. Traditional Wushu is the root of Wushu, which has evolved and passed down from generation to generation, resulting in many schools, boxing types and categories.
In 1991, the fourth sports meeting listed national Wushu as a competition for the first time. The national Wushu events of this Games include traditional boxing, traditional instruments and duet, which are divided into men’s group and women’s group.
Li Yingkui, the referee of the national Wushu project, said that 253 contestants from all over the country were outstanding boxing representatives from all regions, ethnic groups and schools.
The red headrope was tied, and the phoenix was flying in black. In the women’s traditional first-class boxing final held on the afternoon of 24th, Duan Jing, a player of Yunnan team, had a set of bagua palm, which was rigid, flexible, quick and slow, and connected in style.
Duan Jing introduced that this set of Eight Diagrams Palm combines the Eight Diagrams Chain Palm and the Eight Diagrams Lion Palm created by Sha Guozheng, a Yunnan martial artist. Starting from the characteristics of various types of martial arts, the exercise method of the movements is appropriately exaggerated, which increases the difficulty of the exercise and also enhances the appreciation.
Duan Jing is from Kunming, Yunnan Province. She is 8 years old and 35 years old. She has participated in many competitions and won the championship in the 14th World Wushu Championships held in 2017. This is the first time that she has stood on the national traditional sports meeting of ethnic minorities. Here, she met her teammates who had trained together, exchanged information about her participation in martial arts events and activities in recent years, made new friends, and introduced her boxing skills and shared her practice experience with martial arts inheritors and fans from all over the world.
"National martial arts and competitive martial arts are in harmony. Competitive Wushu has increased the difficulty of exercise in the form of expression, improved in speed, strength and range, and is highly ornamental. National Wushu puts more emphasis on the use of attack and skill in action drills. Although there are various kinds of boxing and equipment, each event is the core content of Chinese Wushu, such as kicking, hitting, falling, jumping, rolling and turning. Here I see the unique techniques displayed by everyone, which is a good platform for communication, exchange and integration. " Duan Jing said.
Wushu, with its distinctive characteristics of attack and defense and profound cultural connotation, is deeply loved by people all over the world and has now developed into a global sport. The International Wushu Federation was established on October 3, 1990, and currently has 160 member associations spread across five continents. On January 8, 2020, with the approval of the International Olympic Committee, Wushu became the official event of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which was the first time that Wushu became the official event of the Olympic Games.
At this sports meeting, the athletes showed their talents and the audience feasted their eyes. Li Xiangchun, a tourist from Guiyang, Guizhou, took his mother and daughter to the stands to give shouts and applause to the players, and at the same time, he repeatedly expressed his amazement. "We saw the Monkey King’s golden hoop dance, Guan Yu’s broadsword playing, drunken boxing, and the unique costumes and equipment of various ethnic groups. It was a special surprise. The national martial arts was really profound."
Li Yingkui said that national Wushu shows national culture and regional characteristics, and the display of martial arts in various places and nationalities on the field is conducive to promoting the development of national Wushu projects in the future. Li Yingkui also expects that more traditional boxing techniques and instruments can be scientifically and systematically excavated, sorted out and protected, and displayed with the help of the platform of the Games.
